The hopes for German leadership in animal welfare matters were high when the EUs most powerful state assumed the rotating presidency for the 13th time. Regarding animal welfare issues, it is expected that the German agricultural minister Julia Klöckner will present her idea for a European animal welfare label. Also, animal welfare organisations were hoping that the German presidency would tackle the ongoing issues concerning live transport in the next six months, considering the appointment of an inquiry into live animal transport by the European Parliament in June 2020 and the announcement of the revision of the transport regulation in the Farm to Fork Strategy.
