The German LPT laboratories are allowed to resume animal testing
The suspensive effect of the appeal that the LPT had lodged against the withdrawal of the operating license has been restored.
The resumption of animal experiments in Hamburg-Neugraben is, from the point of view of our German member Deutscher Tierschutzbund, a step in a completely wrong direction. Instead of continuing to rely on questionable animal experiments, from an animal welfare point of view there is an urgent need for an exit and alternative, cruelty-free research approaches.
In January 2020, the irresponsible actions of the operators and the cruel conditions in the LPT animal testing laboratory at the Mienenbüttel site led the authorities to revoke their license to operate. In March 2020, the remaining almost one thousand rats and mice from the Hamburg-Neugraben location were housed in various animal shelters affiliated to Deutscher Tierschutzbund, from where they were placed in species-appropriate and loving homes.
“The closure was an essential step that animal advocates fought tirelessly for. Animals confiscated from the LPT laboratories were taken in and looked after by animal welfare organisations. The fact that it should just resume its operations - with a new managing director, animal welfare officer and animal research leader - is a slap in the face for all animal advocates, ”comments Thomas Schröder, President of Deutscher Tierschutzbund.
