Whale hunting: Japan under pressure

Japan insisted Friday that it no longer whales, an endangered species, in international waters, but is accused of violating a wildlife treaty by allowing the marketing of stocks of killed whales in the past years.

CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) concluded last October that Japan had violated the treaty and ordered it to remedy the situation under penalty of trade sanctions.
