Survey: giving broilers access to natural light is gaining popularity in US poultry industry

A recent survey indicated nearly half of the respondents are currently giving birds access to natural light or are planning on adding it soon.

Giving broiler birds access to natural light is rising in popularity, according to a new survey.

In the first quarter of 2020, nearly half of the respondents to the WATT/Rennier Poultry Confidence Index said they are currently giving their birds access to natural light.

In recent years, poultry growers began adding windows to broiler housing to let natural light in – including major integrators like Perdue Foods and Wayne Farms LLC. The practice is required by the Global Animal Partnership, a third-party animal welfare certification organization.
