While food systems does not yet have the place it deserves on this year’s COP27 agenda in Sharm el-Sheikh, it was addressed in important side-sessions.

As world leaders meet at the COP27 UN climate negotiations in Sharm el-Sheikh, 6-18 November, Eurogroup for Animals calls on the negotiators to recognise the crucial role of animal welfare and a shift to more plant-based diets. Last year, at COP26 in Glasgow, governments failed to address these important aspects for reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.

A joint commission (composed of deputies and senators) reached an agreement this Thursday, October 21st, on the bill which aims to strengthen the fight against animal abuse, opening the way to its rapid adoption.

More than 50 NGOs, including Eurogroup for Animals and several member organisations, have signed an open letter calling on the United Nations Climate Change COP26 to recognise the role of animal agriculture as one of the largest contributors of climate change.
