Project Consultant - Octopus

Reports to:  Farm animals Programme Leader with technical input management from the Fish Senior Programme Leader

Programme: Farm Animals

Application deadline: 8 July 2022

Background:

Eurogroup for Animals is the Brussels based European umbrella advocacy organisation, representing 84 national and international members across Europe and beyond. Together we provide a voice for the billions of animals kept in laboratories, farms and homes or living in the wild. Our vision is to build a Europe that truly cares for animals where the well-being of animals is assured and where they experience a good life.

The purpose of Eurogroup for Animals is to drive positive change for animals by convening its members around common goals, and coordinating EU wide action to jointly influence EU law and policy making. Our advocacy work consists of dedicated programmes and a growing portfolio of projects and campaigns.

The farm animals programme focuses on two key pillars: a first pillar on better protection for farm animals, focusing on significantly raising the level of animal welfare of the EU legislation, and a second pillar on food systems transformation, focusing on reducing the number of animals farmed for food and replacing slaughtered animal products.

Purpose of the role

The first large-scale octopus farm is now being developed in Spain. In order to respond to this development, we are looking for a highly professional and motivated person to coordinate and deliver advocacy against the emergence of this sector at national, EU, and global levels. Throughout this process the person will collect learning on the steps taken to develop a new agriculture species and intensive production system and identify points for the systematic monitoring of emergent species and systems.

Objectives:

  • Mapping of licensing requirements and financial support for new animal species and production systems at EU and national levels.
  • Providing relevant technical content for colleagues in Eurogroup for Animals to ensure that octopus farming issues are well represented in our lobbying for animal welfare protections and sustainable food systems at the EU level.
  • Ensuring that octopus farming is widely recognised by NGOs, policymakers, industry, and civil society as emblematic of poor animal welfare and unsustainable farming.
  • Eliciting and managing technical and advocacy collaborations with our member organisations especially through our working groups.
  • Collaborating with our member organisations and other networks to advocate against octopus farming at national, EU and global levels.

Position in the organisation:

The project consultant will have a Eurogroup for Animals email address and participate in team meetings, and reports to the Farm Programme Leader. The consultant will also collaborate with our Farmed Animals team and our Public Affairs team to ensure the integration of octopus farming in our wider advocacy on animal welfare protections and sustainable food systems. The project consultant will engage directly with our member working groups.
