This week WELFARM launched an initiative calling French citizens to take part in the recently opened European Commission Consultation on the future of Europe. By guiding its supporters through the rather complex consultation while raising specific animal welfare issues, WELFARM provides a great example of animal advocates mobilising citizens to take responsibility for the future of animal welfare in Europe.
Through its consultation, the Commission invites citizens to express concerns and expectations on a host of issues. As such, the questionnaire created by a panel of citizens offers an opportunity to raise the biggest challenges on animal welfare to policy-makers ahead of European elections in 2019.
One great example of an animal advocacy organisation seizing this opportunity is Eurogroup for Animals’ French member WELFARM. The WELFARM team created a well-designed educative website promoting the consultation. As part of the call for mobilisation, all interested citizens can find suggestions on how to answer questions with a high potential to impact animal welfare.
For example, for the question ‘What decisions taken at European Union level would make you prouder of belonging to the Union?’, WELFARM suggests the following answers:
- Offer better protection to animals.
- Demand a total and definitive ban on the practice of force-feeding.
- Demand a total and definitive ban on tail docking, teeth grinding and castration of piglets without anesthesia.
- Demand a reduction of live farmed animals transport duration and the prohibition of long-distance transport.
We encourage all animal welfare organisations to follow WELFARM’s example and capitalise on the opportunity to lock animal welfare in the EU’s next work programme.
