#Act4 LabAnimals The statistical report released this month by the European Commission shows a small decrease in the overall number of animals being used in experiments in 2018. However, the report shows that this decrease does not reflect a significant movement towards the reduction of procedures on animals. Latest EU statistics on animals used in science reveal ‘severe’ suffering occurring despite availability of alternative methods, and the pressing need for a ‘phase out’ strategy 20 July 2021
#Act4 LabAnimals Despite the clear objective of the Animals in Science Directive to replace and reduce the number of animals used in science, 2020 reports of the European Commission revealed that more than 23 million animals were impacted by scientific practices in the EU in 2017. Accelerating the transition to innovation without the use of animals in research, regulatory testing and education - time for action! 4 June 2021
#Act4 LabAnimals This World Day for Animals in Laboratories (#WDAIL) comes after a year that was far from kind to these animals, but also a high year for non-animal science. We and our members are continuing to raise awareness and call for concrete and coordinated policies to promote a move towards scientific research that doesn’t use animals. How close is the EU to animal-free science? 23 April 2021
#Act4 LabAnimals Following calls from EU authorities for cosmetics ingredients to be tested on animals, Europe's leading animal protection groups have sent a joint statement to MEPs urging them to uphold the groundbreaking cosmetics testing and marketing bans. Leading Animal Protection groups join forces for animal testing bans 23 November 2020
#Act4 LabAnimals An open letter, spearheaded by ADI, is calling for the use of non-animal research methods in the search for a vaccine for COVID-19. Although animal testing is not required, and often unreliable, it is still taking place globally. ADI urges WHO to cut animal tests to tackle COVID-19 16 November 2020 ADI
#Act4 LabAnimals A New York-based nonprofit group, CAARE, that led the drive to create legislation to promote “cutting-edge methods” of research superior to animal-based testing, today lauded the announcement that the “Humane Research and Testing Act of 2020” has been introduced in US Congress. #Act4 LabAnimals Most animals used in biomedical experiments are not accounted for in published papers, a first-of-its-kind study suggests. The analysis found that only one-quarter of more than 5500 lab animals used over a 2-year period at one university in the Netherlands ended up being mentioned in a scientific paper afterward. The researchers believe the pattern could be similar at institutions around the world, resulting in potentially millions of animals disappearing from scientific studies. Millions of animals may be missing from scientific studies 26 October 2020
#Act4 LabAnimals Animal testing to meet the requirements of European cosmetics legislation has been long consigned to history. However, in rare but significant cases, the European chemical agency has insisted that cosmetic ingredients be tested on vertebrate animals to meet workplace safety standards required under EU chemicals legislation REACH.
