#Act4 LabAnimals With a focus on the “3Rs in transition: from development to application”, the Congress hosted a number of sessions covering a diverse range of topics. Many sessions explored the development of innovative non animal models for application in the development of treatments for human disease as well as areas such as chemical safety testing and drug testing. #Act4 LabAnimals The statistical report released this month by the European Commission shows a small decrease in the overall number of animals being used in experiments in 2018. However, the report shows that this decrease does not reflect a significant movement towards the reduction of procedures on animals. Latest EU statistics on animals used in science reveal ‘severe’ suffering occurring despite availability of alternative methods, and the pressing need for a ‘phase out’ strategy 20 July 2021
#Act4 LabAnimals Despite the clear objective of the Animals in Science Directive to replace and reduce the number of animals used in science, 2020 reports of the European Commission revealed that more than 23 million animals were impacted by scientific practices in the EU in 2017. Accelerating the transition to innovation without the use of animals in research, regulatory testing and education - time for action! 4 June 2021
#Act4 LabAnimals On World Day for Laboratory Animals, the 24th of April, our Dutch member organisation Proefdiervrij launched their new campaign “Joint research without laboratory animals”, to promote animal-free arthritis research. #Act4 LabAnimals This World Day for Animals in Laboratories (#WDAIL) comes after a year that was far from kind to these animals, but also a high year for non-animal science. We and our members are continuing to raise awareness and call for concrete and coordinated policies to promote a move towards scientific research that doesn’t use animals. How close is the EU to animal-free science? 23 April 2021
#Act4 LabAnimals The European Parliament submitted an oral question to the European Commission on its commitment to reducing and replacing the use of animals in science since the number of animals used for scientific purposes has not decreased significantly in decades. How will the Commission ensure that future actions are in line with its commitment, especially in the light of present opportunities such as Next Generation EU and the new Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability? Oral question to European Commission on its commitment and concrete actions to replace the use of animals in science 6 January 2021
#Act4 LabAnimals A Joint Research Centre (JRC) study investigates research approaches in Alzheimer’s disease and certain cancers to understand why results often fail to translate into clinical practice. Human-relevant models and indicators to monitor innovation and impact of funded research projects are proposed. Towards human-relevant models in biomedical research 18 December 2020
#Act4 LabAnimals Joint Research Centre (JRC) scientists have contributed to a new guideline released by the International Cooperation on Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Registration of Veterinary Medicinal Products (VICH) to allow the waiving of an unnecessary animal test for batch safety testing of veterinary vaccines. Major step towards reduction of animal tests for the quality control of veterinary vaccines 18 December 2020
#Act4 LabAnimals A coordinated approach amongst European Union policy makers that considers research, method and validation is needed for non-animal alternative cosmetic testing to fully replace animal data, says the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). ECHA: 'Coordinated effort' at policy level required for alternatives to replace animal testing in EU 10 December 2020
#Act4 LabAnimals Animals remain the first choice for testing and research in drug discovery and development, despite scientific advances across a range of other methodologies, and some tightening of regulation in recent years. There is a growing range of human-relevant methods that are valid and reliable for predicting human outcomes. Human models for human drug development 10 December 2020
