#Act4 Aquatics Today, the European Parliament took a stand on the future of aquaculture in Europe by adopting MEP Clara Aguilera’s report on “Striving for a sustainable and competitive EU aquaculture: the way forward”. The Parliament has for the first time given animal welfare a prominent place in its position on European aquaculture, calling for important steps to improve the situation for fish, but missed the opportunity to take action against some of the worst welfare conditions and unsustainable systems. #Act4 AnimalsEU On 15 March, the European Parliament adopted its position on the revision of the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The report, led by MEP Pascal Durand, calls for animal welfare to be included in the scope of the revised legislation. #Act4 FarmAnimals Last year, the Committee of Inquiry on the Protection of Animals during Transport (ANIT) was formed to look into various complaints of animals suffering on road and sea travels. With the upcoming Committee vote in December, a lot is at stake as animal advocates insist on a thorough Revision of the Transport Regulation which ensures effective protection of all animals transported. #Act4 Aquatics The European Parliament’s Fisheries Committee (PECH) is currently considering initiating a so-called own-initiative report on fish welfare in aquaculture. If the initiative goes ahead, it will mean the European Parliament taking a formal position on a range of fish welfare issues and related policy. With upcoming Commission initiatives and the rising awareness of consumers, this could be the crucial move to put fish welfare high on the EU’s agenda during a critical time to finally tackle the welfare issues of this long overlooked group of farmed animals.
