#Act4 LabAnimals On 4 January 2024, the European Commission launched a public consultation to update Annexes III and IV of Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes. Eurogroup for Animals welcomes the efforts to include standards for the care and accommodation of animals and acceptable methods of killing for species previously overlooked. However, we regret that the revision missed the opportunity to update existing provisions for other species. Limited progress: revision of Annexes III and IV of Directive 2010/63/EU restricted to a few species 7 February 2024
#Act4 LabAnimals In December 2023, the European Commission published its proposal for a Regulation on the protection of animals during transport. The proposal explicitly recognises that animals transported for scientific purposes are covered by the Regulation. However, the lack of species-specific provisions addressing crucial factors such as fitness for transport and journey times raises deep concerns. What does the EU’s Transport Regulation proposal mean for animals used for scientific purposes? 19 January 2024
#Act4 LabAnimals The Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled against German chemicals company Symrise AG, who challenged a European Chemicals Agency request to perform animal testing on two cosmetic ingredients. This means additional animal testing may be demanded by regulators to assess the safety of cosmetic ingredients, despite the EU ban on animal testing for cosmetics in place since 2013. #Act4 LabAnimals The European Parliament held its long-awaited plenary vote on the revision of the Regulation on the Classification, Labelling and Packaging of chemical substances and mixtures (CLP) on 4 October. Although some new measures in the revised regulation are encouraging, other measures are still too weak and do not go far enough to reduce and ultimately phase out animal testing. #Act4 LabAnimals “The history of cancer research has been a history of curing cancer in the mouse. We have cured mice of cancer for decades, and it simply didn’t work in humans.” This statement was made over 20 years ago by Richard Klausner, former director of the National Cancer Institute. #Act4 LabAnimals In a submitted response to the European Commission’s public consultation on the revision of the REACH regulation, Eurogroup for Animals called for progress towards humane and progressive non-animal testing methods in achieving protection for human health and the environment from chemicals. REACH regulation: paradigm shift towards non-animal methods needed to protect animals, human health and the environment 25 April 2022
#Act4 LabAnimals H2020 scientific consortia have criticised the European Commission for conducting a “biased” survey on the REACH regulation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals), where non animal methods are undermined. European Commission criticised for biased survey on EU chemicals regulation REACH 7 April 2022
#Act4 LabAnimals With a focus on the “3Rs in transition: from development to application”, the Congress hosted a number of sessions covering a diverse range of topics. Many sessions explored the development of innovative non animal models for application in the development of treatments for human disease as well as areas such as chemical safety testing and drug testing.
