OXFORD-based MEP, Catherine Bearder, has become a trustee for an animal welfare charity.

Ms Bearder has been given the new role at the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).

The Liberal Democrat was re-elected as an MEP for South East England last month.

Ms Bearder has worked to tackle the illegal wildlife trade and help write the EU's Action Plan against wildlife trafficking.

She said: “Environmental protection has always been my passion and I have put this at the heart of my political work and also throughout my career in various forms.

“The work that IFAW does across the world is immensely important and I am proud, and honoured, to be appointed as trustee.”

The MEP works with elected members and ministers from African, Caribbean and Pacific countries and stands for environmental protection measures.
