The way fish are slaughter is 'one of the things to change', as well as the 'stocking density and the implementation of environmental enrichment', say the researchers that want legislation to avoid the suffering of fish in aquaculture.

Researchers from the Algarve Sea Sciences Center and a university in Barcelona want legislation to prevent the suffering of fish in aquaculture systems. "At European level, there are laws, but they are few and insufficient and those that neither exist nor are enforced", João Saraiva, one of the three authors of a study published in the journal Forum of Animal Law Studies ,  together with Teresa Giménez-Candela , told Lusa and Helena Bauer, from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

According to the biologist, who created a research group on
ethology and animal welfare  at the Center for Marine Sciences in the Algarve, the study “crossed for the first time” the biology and welfare of fish with the existing legislation, “joining two worlds that usually don't cross”.
