Open letter to the WHO about COVID-19 health risks and wildlife markets

Eurogroup for Animals, its member organisations and many other bodies from the animal welfare movement - 241 in all - have sent a letter to the WHO asking for a permanent global ban on wildlife markets.

While the organisations acknowledge and commend the World Health Organisation’s current efforts to contain the pandemic spread of COVID-19, it’s clear that it needs to publicly state the proven link between these markets and serious threats to human health.

The letter, which is an initiative led by World Animal Protection, asks that as well as recommending a global ban on wildlife markets, the WHO needs to ask governments to ban the use of wildlife in traditional medicine, as well as to take a highly precautionary approach to the wildlife trade.
