A new Bill has been put forward that seeks to amend legislation that allows for animal testing in South Africa, calling for an outright ban for cosmetics.

The draft proposal seeks to amend the definition of ‘cosmetic’ in the Animal Protection Act, and to ban the sale and manufacturing of cosmetics that were tested on animals in or outside of the country.

Other proposals in the amendment include that it become an offence to sell or manufacture a cosmetic that has been tested on an animal in the Republic, and to make it a new offence to test a cosmetic, part of, or an ingredient on animals.

Should the amendment pass, South Africa will become the latest country to ban animal testing for cosmetics, which is so far prohibited in 40 countries across the world.
