However, the battle is not yet won. The Parliament must now approve the bill before it becomes effective. The bill now grants governments in devolved lands to determine the date on which the prohibition will take effect, which could mean the ban coming into force at different times in Scotland, Wales, and England, leaving animals vulnerable to being exported.

One Kind is urging the Scottish Government to work with the UK Government and the Welsh Government to deliver a ban across the whole of Great Britain at the same time, and as soon as possible.

The pressing need for a ban

In 2019, Scotland exported a total of 26,721 farmed animals across Europe. Sheep, cows, and pigs will continue to be subjected to long journeys, overcrowded quarters, uncontrolled temperatures, sickness, and insufficient food and water supplies until a live export prohibition is enacted. These animals may give birth, become injured or die during these long and arduous journeys.
