Animal Welfare Minister Beate Hartinger-Klein (FPÖ) has spoken out in favor of a Europe-wide ban on fur farming.

The minister asked the EU Commission to reconsider a tender for a “European Union reference center for animal welfare in poultry and other small farm animals”.

Such a reference center, where scientific animal protection standards are being developed, already exists for pigs. A reference center for poultry and small farm animals, including animals for fur production, is now to follow.

The organization Vier Pfoten welcomed this step. "But we want a ban instead of legitimizing fur animal husbandry through pseudo standards," said Elisabeth Penz, spokeswoman for Four Paws. The alarm was raised weeks ago.
