EP PECH Committee’s public hearing will look at ways to make aquaculture sustainable

17 February 2020
News
The objective of the hearing on February 19th will be to listen to different stakeholders about the current challenges facing the aquaculture sector, notably linked to production.

The speakers include fish farmers from varied realities, ranging from sea-based aquaculture in the Atlantic and Mediterranean to the ponds of the Czech Republic. Other speakers include researchers and entrepreneurs involved in developing innovative practices, from Hungary, Belgium and Croatia.

The EP approved an own-initiative report entitled "Towards a sustainable and competitive European aquaculture sector" in 2018, in which it stressed the need to stimulate diversification and innovation in aquaculture. In the meantime, the European Commission is expected to publish new strategic guidelines for the development of aquaculture later in 2020.
