Denmark bets on slow growth broiler chicken breeds

24 August 2020
News
Danpo, the largest Danish chicken processor, had pledged to phase out broiler chickens by the end of 2021, switching from Ross genetics to the slow-growing Ranger Gold.

The justification for this decision was the commitment to animal welfare that Danpo had made, based on its consideration of the negative aspects towards the consumer that the current chicken raising implies, due to its problems of lameness and cardiovascular or respiratory pathologies.

Complementing this information with the opinions of two Spanish teachers, from the Veterinary Faculty of Madrid and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, discussing the advantages of slow raising chickens and consumer preferences, the news ended by stating that Danpo's decision was the result of the European Chicken Commitment initiative, presented in Spain by the animal rights organization Equalia last spring.
