COVID-19: Seek 'support' from your animal but respect their welfare needs

Pets can mean a lot to us, especially in these difficult times.
The measures regarding the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 are not only changing our world but also the world of our pets.

Saskia Arndt, professor of Animal Behavior at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, explains: “I currently see how different the animals deal with this in my own cats. While I now work from home, one asks for more, while the other asks for less attention than I am used to. Each animal has its own personality and the needs of my cats also differ. For their welfare and for the welfare of animals in themselves it is necessary to take these individual needs into account as much as possible.”

"Ask" the animal to say: observe its behavior. We now spend a lot of time with our pets and this gives us the opportunity to learn to (better) understand the behavior of our pets.
