Thousands of citizens mobilised on six continents to raise awareness on June 14 for the third annual Stop Live Transport International Day of Awareness organised by Compassion in World Farming.

In Brussels, a group – including MEPs Jytte Guteland (S&D, SE) and Anja Hazekamp (GUE, NL) – gathered in front of the European Parliament holding up big cut-out hands in a ‘STOP’ gesture. Other actions in the 33 countries that took part included peaceful protests, festival stalls, candlelit vigils and a campaign of selfies in animal masks across social media using the #StopLiveTransport hashtag.

The day aimed to raise awareness about live transport and make a significant step towards the ultimate goal – a stop to the transportation of millions of live animals over thousands of kilometres every year. Their journeys are often excessively long, without sufficient food, water or rest, and even animals that are sick, injured, very young and heavily pregnant are packed into ill-equipped and overcrowded vehicles. Some cannot lie down at all, while those who do may be injured or trampled to death. Others are painfully stooped under insufficient headroom.

After all this, the exhausted and dehydrated animals are slaughtered at journey’s end using inhumane methods.

Specifically, Stop Live Transport’s organisers and supporters want to see a ban on live exports from the UK for slaughter and fattening, an 8-hour journey limit within the EU, and a ban on live exports from the EU to non-EU countries.

For more information, visit the Stop Live Transport website, which also has several petitions to sign.
