Phil Hogan (58) has been responsible for agricultural policy in the EU Commission since 2014.

The Irish Conservative Minister for the Environment was previously in Dublin; he started his professional life as an insurance broker and auctioneer. Hogan's Brussels mandate ends this year. Another term would be an honor, he said recently.

Commissioner, some people see the "Green Week" above all as a large appetizer buffet. What brings you to the opening of the agricultural fair in Berlin?

As EU Commissioner for Agriculture, I cannot miss the world's largest gathering of farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs. I am attending the "Green Week" for the fifth time in a row. Here I get a lot of the hopes and concerns of the industry and meet colleagues from many countries.

Can one really call European food production "green" - given the declining biodiversity and high CO2 emissions in agriculture?
