Calling on the EU to promote plant-based food instead of meat and dairy

News
Under the EU promotion policy for agricultural products, Regulation (EU) No 1144/2014, the EU has granted funding to promote beef, pork, chicken and other animal products through promotion campaigns such as “Let’s Talk about Pork”, “What a wonderful beef” and “Cheese up your life”.

As part of the Farm to Fork strategy, the European Commission is reviewing the promotion policy, “with a view to enhancing its contribution to sustainable production and consumption, and in line with the shift to a more plant-based diet, with less red and processed meat and more fruits and vegetables.”

Eurogroup for Animals and member organisations have provided feedback to the roadmap consultation, calling for an end to promotional campaigns that support meat and dairy products from intensive systems and that incentivise meat and dairy consumption.

Eurogroup for Animals sees potential for a revised policy to enhance the profile of European produced sustainable plant-based protein for human consumption, meat alternatives and production processes instead of promoting animal consumption.
