As a result, it would make it easier for the industrial concentration of slaughtering and, by extension, the over-rationalization of major slaughterhouses.
The process of industrialization has transformed slaughterhouses into two relatively distinct models: major private companies that are constantly increasing their slaughter volume, and small low-production facilities that provide slaughtering services on a relatively small scale in a given area. The implementation of animal protection regulation n°1099/2009 could aggravate the socioeconomic fragility of small slaughterhouses due to the renovation work that it requires.  However, animal protection requires structural rigidities to be transcended and for the human-animal work relationship once again to be placed at the centre of the process. In this respect, small slaughterhouses could have some advantage over major ones provided that they receive some support, especially financial.
