Animal cruelty: Shock rise in puppy trafficking from Romania to UK

MORE than twice as many dogs are being imported into the UK from Romania than previously believed, shock new figures reveal.

The RSPCA is running a campaign to “scrap the puppy trade” and there are deep concerns about the welfare of dogs in Romania. 

The Government also admitted many more came to the UK from Ireland than previously announced – 7,828, not 4,896. 

A small number of countries dominate imports. Alongside Romania and Ireland, Spain (4,995), Cyprus (3,566) and Hungary (1,585) are the major sources. In contrast, just 13 came from Germany. 

David Bowles, of the RSPCA, said: “The new figures show a worrying increase in commercially imported dogs from Romania.
