Amendments to draft opinion on organic farming show desire for animal welfare improvements

30 March 2015
News
Members of the European Parliament’s environment committee have now tabled over 400 amendments to the Commission proposal on organic farming.

The amendments, which will be discussed and voted on in the coming weeks, include several that aim to improve the consideration of animal welfare in organic farming.

Eurogroup for Animals has been advocating for higher welfare standards in organic systems in recognition that more stringent and harmonized rules are needed to better protect both animals and consumers that care about the animals used in organic systems.

Some improvements which Eurogroup supports include efforts to prohibit avoidable and painful mutilations, such as castration, and to assure improved rules for the transport and slaughter of animals. Other important amendments would ensure the use of adapted breeds, improve keeping conditions for calves, and better guarantee improved husbandry practices, such as better outdoor access for animals and the prohibition of tethering of livestock.

Although Eurogroup for Animals thinks additional amendments will be needed, especially in the agriculture committee, which is the lead committee for this file, we welcome the many improvements that have been supported by several members of parliament in the environment committee. It is clear that leading politicians have recognized the need to take action on animal welfare in organic farming as a key principle of sustainable farming systems. Eurogroup for Animals is closely monitoring developments prior to the vote in the environment committee which will take place in early May. A draft report on oganic farming is also expected to go to translation at the end of April before discussion in the agriculture committee in the coming months.
