After GAIA’s ‘Save the Kangaroos’ campaign revealed the cruel conditions in which more than 1.6 million kangaroos are hunted every year, Belgian supermarket Delhaize removed kangaroo meat from their shelves – and now Carrefour is following suit. 

“Our country is the largest importer of kangaroo meat in the world, when there is no need or any interest in consuming so-called ‘exotic’ meat,” says Ann De Greef, director of GAIA, the Belgian organization for the defense of animals. “Even now, while Australia is being ravaged by unprecedented fires, the Australian government continues to allow the hunting of kangaroos, because it wrongly continues to consider this totem animal as a pest.”

GAIA is inviting Makro, Match and Cora supermarkets to follow the example of Carrefour and Delhaize, as  well as asking the Belgian government to suspend, at least temporarily, the transport of kangaroo meat.
