In violation of the Pigs Directive 2008/120/EC, tail-docking is still carried out in all European Union’s Member States, with the exception of Sweden and Finland. This is the latest in a series of audits by
DG SANTE whose results are discouraging as they show the complete lack of enforcement of the Pigs Directive on the part of the main European pig-producing and pig exporting countries.
The report about tail docking in Germany concludes that although central and Länder authorities have spent considerable sums on research and communicate on its results, their strategies to reduce tail-biting and avoid routine tail docking of pigs have not produced tangible results and
tail-docking is still routinely carried out in the country. The central competent authority estimates the incidence of tail-docking in Germany is over 95%.
