WELFARM launches its poster campaign against castration without anesthesia
After its poster campaign censorship in september 2016 in many cities in West of France, WELFARM starts again its operation with posters in parisian metro stations during the agricultural centre. This event takes place within #COUIC2018 campaign against piglets castration without anesthesia. This practice is undergone by 10 million male piglets each year in France.
September 2016 : after a few days of display in Brest and Le Mans downtown, agricultural pressure groups and local political actors manage to have the #COUIC2018 posters removed. Whatever! While the agricultural centre takes place in Paris, WELFARM starts again its poster campaign from February, 28 to March, 6 in 113 metro stations.
This campaigns’ goal is to encourage professional practices’ evolution, and to interpellate the Minister of Agriculture in order to incite them to resort to this mutilations’ alternatives.
Castration without anesthesia, a painful practice Nowadays, 85% male piglets in France are castrated without anesthesia, even if alernatives do exist and are even predominant in several european countries. Norway, Swiss and Sweden have even forbidden this pratice on their territory. Germany plans to forbid it in 2019. In France, in front of the different stakeholders immobility, the French association WELFARM decided in 2016 to launch a sensitization and mobilization campaign, meeting breeders groups, distributors and agri-food industrials. The goal of this campaign is to create an awareness about the urgent need to abandon castration without anesthesia and to resort to existing alternatives.
Call to citizen action By clicking on the campaign website couic2018.fr, citizens can add their names to the more of 120 000 petition signatories, and by this way interpellate the Minister of Agriculture. They are encouraged to write to the agri-food actors that have refused WELFARM’s dialogue proposition.
