On May 18th, the members of the EU Animal Welfare Platform sub-group on equines gathered in Brussels for their second meeting which, in this occasion, was hosted in the premises of the European Horse Network.
The participating Member States (FR, CZ, SE, DE, NL, IT & DK), and the other stakeholders involved met to approve several amendments to the draft ‘Guidelines for responsible ownership and care of horses‘. After having discussed the initial text proposed by the Danish Ministry of Environment and Food during their first meeting, last week the sub-group proceeded further towards a finalised document. A parallel process to develop guidelines for donkeys will start in mid-June and will see the involvement of The Donkey Sanctuary as an ad hoc expert.
At the meeting, members also agreed that the sub-group will be looking into producing practical factsheets on the example of the ‘Best guide for transport of animals‘. Once completed, the guidelines will provide horizontal guidance to strengthen equine welfare across the EU.
